Naturalight Solar, Inc installs VELUX Solar Hot Water System in Buck Residence

Naturalight Solar, Inc recently installed a VELUX Solar Hot Water System in the incredible residence of Barbara Buck.

You can see how the VELUX Solar Panels integrate attractively into the roof.

Tube skylights fit with the energy efficiency standards set for this project. They were a great way to get light into some of the inner rooms, without heat transfer in or out of those rooms.

The entire residence is build with the most up to date home efficiency materials and products.

To learn more about this amazing residence, check out this article that was recently publish in the North Bay Biz Online:

"Ensconced in a half-circle of majestic native trees, the views from this prime part of Barbara Buck’s 755-acre estate are expansive and exquisite. What’s more, Buck and her construction team worked hard to make sure the house is as close to being off the grid as possible.
“It’s almost a contradiction in terms, a house this size being this green,” begins Sebastopol contractor David Leff. “Barbara [Buck] calls it ‘Gothic Lodge’ in terms of style. It has about 4,000 square feet of interior living space…and another 3,000 square feet of exterior living space!”

Buck’s new house above Cazadero is, indeed, an impressive bit of work, from inspiration to construction. “I’ve lived some of the best years of my life in Lake Tahoe and Colorado,” says the Santa Fe, New Mexico, native, “and I wanted my home to be something that came out of the earth. I grew up in New Mexico, and people there have a connectedness to the land that I admire. It’s also important, I think, that you understand this planet is a living thing.

“To my way of thinking, the planet needs a break. Don’t you get the feeling Mother Earth ought to be getting a little mad at us? She ought to be just about ready to shake us off like fleas. Think about it: There’s no place else to go. That new planet they just found out there in the solar system? How many light years is it away from us? Ha! That’s not an option. We have to do better at taking care of the one planet we have, and that’s at the core of my thinking for this house.”

The home’s setting is spectacular. Ensconced in a half-circle of majestic redwood, fir and madrone trees, the views from this prime part of her 755-acre estate are expansive and exquisite. Buck and Leff worked hard to make sure the house was as close to being off the grid as possible, both knowing that the West Sonoma County power supply—what with wind and rainstorms of ferocious impact—can be iffy at best..."

What does a tube skylight cost; and what is it worth?

The average cost of a 14” VELUX SUN TUNNEL Skylight installed in Santa Rosa is $695.

(Three feet of tubing, one story home, composition roof, including tax) (Tubes come in 10”, 14”, and 22”)

What is it worth?

  • Santa Rosa has an average of 256 sunny days per year*.
  • On a sunny day the light from a 14” VELUX SUN TUNNEL is equivalent to 400 watts.
  • There’s an average of 9 hours of full sun per day.
  • 400 watts X 9 hours = 3.6 kilowatt hours per day
  • 3.6 kilowatt hours X 256 sunny days = 922 kWh per year
  • Take an average electricity rate of $.12 per hour and multiply that by 922 kWh and you get a savings of $111 per year. (Of course the rate of electricity is going to go way up over 20 years, so this value will increase)
  • The VELUX SUN TUNNEL is warranteed for 20 years, so $111 X 20 years = $2220 saved from not turning on an electric light during the day.

So a 14” VELUX SUN TUNNEL Skylight is worth at least $2220 just based on the value of electricity.

Add to that the other benefits of installing a VELUX SUN TUNNEL Skylight:

  • It adds value to your home
  • You get light without heat loss or gain
  • You live and work in a more enjoyable environment
  • You are happier and are more productive
  • You are healthier- Getting enough sun exposure is proving to have many health benefits
  • You have used less electricity which means less CO2 in the environment, and more $ in your pocket
