Light has different qualities depending on weather, season, time of day, and location. We can reproduce the different types of light artificially and they affect the interactions we have in different rooms of our home.

Direct light is needed when we have to do a task requiring precision and concentration: reading, writing, painting, sewing, etc…

Reflected light is suitable in a room where you need an even distribution of light. When we require good general lighting, reflected and direct lighting work together to create harmonious and functional room lighting.

Filtered natural daylight creates a gentle quiet feeling. We often experience filtered light through blinds and shutters.

In his book- The Natural House- David Pearson recommends the best locations for rooms so they maximize sunlight. The bedrooms should be oriented towards sunrise; this puts us in touch with the natural cycle of day and night, so we wake up with the sun.

Does being inside leave you feeling tired?

Most artificial light sources give off a radiance which is biased to a particular color range in the spectrum.  This means it is not giving off balanced vibrations and being in a room that is constantly lit by such a light can cause energy imbalances in our system. This can result in problems such as headaches, eye-strain, loss of energy, nausea

Incandescent bulbs which are ordinary household bulbs give off more red light than normal daylight. This is why these lamps appear yellow.

Fluorescent bulbs give off ultraviolet and blue light. These lights send out pulsing vibrations. Old lights may start to hum and flicker. They interfere with our own vibrations setting up a resonance within us and can make us hyperactive and irritable.

Fluorescent strip lights can also adversely affect your eye sight, and people who work under these lights can suffer from sore eyes. The blue coloring can make you feel cold, and all the colors in the room will have a blue tint. The newer generations of compact fluorescents are more efficient and longer lasting.

Tungsten-halogen lamps give a bright white light close to daylight in quality. These are powerful lights and good for general illumination. These blubs have an extremely long life and are more energy efficient.

Full spectrum lamps more closely resemble balance of spectral light found in daylight. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) has now been identified as one of the main causes of many sleep and emotional problems. Depressive symptoms can be significantly improved within the first two to four days when a person is exposed to full spectrum lighting.

Natural light from windows and skylights in the home and or work place reduces eye strain and boosts productivity and mood.

Light is not only essential to our body, but feeds and uplifts our spirits

Light is the purest healing force in the universe.

Plenty of full spectrum light each day equals good health and lots of energy. Light and air are primary sources of vital energy and create a strong immune system.

Bill Keith, SunRise Solar: Inventor of a solar attic fan that dramatically cuts energy bills

Bill Keith of St. John, Indiana had run a roofing company with his brother for 20 years when he invented his solar-powered attic fan, aiming to cut his customers' electric bills.                                                                     

He attached a little 10-watt solar panel to a DC motor to drive a 12-foot exhaust fan.   The fan works at peak power exactly when it needs to, when the sun is fiercest and the temperature rising, cutting the cooling bill for an average home by about 30 percent.   In the winter, the fan removes damp air, and extending the life of the roof.

The company has just 24 employees, but uses local suppliers for its raw materials, manufacturing and distribution, helping those companies stay afloat even in these rough times.

Bret Wolf, who manages business development for Indiana Vac-Form, calls SunRise Solar "a key customer”:

“They’ve helped level off the peaks and valleys of our business, allowing us to better plan for people, resources, machine time.

That stability also benefits the companies supplying our raw materials. We've obviously felt the slowdown through our customers…but SunRise Solar has helped us maintain our business in a very difficult economy."
